Sermon Info

How are you growing as a disciple? Is it through daily practices and spiritual disciplines? Careful study and biblical application? A disciple is an always-growing follower of Jesus Christ. Who are you growing with as a disciple? Who is mentoring you? Who are you growing alongside? Into whose life are you investing yours? Discipleship is always a “we” and never just a “me” endeavor. That’s why the brotherhood in Acts was so vital. Finally, what difference does your growth make? Growing in Jesus will always lead to serving others for Jesus. If your spiritual growth isn’t leading to personal sacrifice for the sake of others, it’s safe to say that the growth isn’t spiritual.

When God scatters people, He’s sowing seeds of the Gospel.
Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. Acts 11:20

Jesus told them another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. Matthew 13:24

We trend toward crediting the apostles we know, but this is nameless believers speaking out about the only name that matters.
The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. Acts 11:21

Who’s the key character in your story?
When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done… Acts 11:23

If something is worth doing at all, it’s worth doing as a team over time.
Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. Acts 11:25-26

“The essential thing ‘in heaven and earth’ is, apparently (to repeat it once more), that there should be long obedience in the same direction, that thereby results, and has always resulted in the long run, something which has made life worth living.” Friedrich Nietzsche

Discipleship always births mission.
The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea. Acts 11:29
