Sermon Info

Summary

It is beyond our imagination and ability to comprehend the love of God who called, rescued, and made us His children. As God’s children we have a new identity, a hope, and a mission to invest in others. We also have a battle. The battle is against our old self and it’s desire to sin. The Apostle John encourages us that although Christians may fall into sin we will not live in it.

Content

A beautiful life invests in others.

To invest in others, we live our new identity. (v.1)

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10

Propitiation = Jesus bore God’s wrath so we can bear God’s favor.

To invest in others, we live our new identity with hope. (v. 2-3)

To invest in others, we live our new identity with hope in midst of a battle. (v. 4-9)

Sin is lawlessness = it is active rebellion against God that originates from the heart.

The devil’s work is to sin.
Jesus’ work is to save.

For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:13

By the Spirit = the Holy Spirit is the only adequate power to battle sin
Put to Death = to take away the power to act, or exert force, or to grow
Misdeeds of the body = your old self and it’s desire to rebel

“Always be killing sin or it will be killing you.” - John Owen

To invest in others, we live our new identity with hope in the midst of a battle for God’s mission. (v. 10)
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:34-35
