Sermon Info

Summary

John was faithful. John was with Jesus in the good times, like Palm Sunday, and in the tough times, like the cross. While the other disciples scattered, John stayed. When the Resurrection came, John “saw and believed.” Jesus changed John from fear and anger to confidence and love. May we be people who are faithful. Faithful to Jesus all of our life. Through the good times and the struggles, may we be faithful to God, to our family and to His Church. Are you faithful? Are you growing in your confidence and love because of Jesus? May we be faithful.

Content

The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel.” John 12:12-13

What we learn from John:

1. The call is to believe.
Finally, the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. John 20:8

  • John uses the word “believe” 98 times in the Gospel of John (more than any other book).
  • John was around Jesus for 3 years, but he still did not fully believe.
  • The Resurrection is the defining point of Christianity and for all Christ-followers.
  • Do you believe?

2. Belief must bring a change in your life.
When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do You want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them. Luke 9:54

  • Jesus changes John’s heart and life.
  • John goes from anger to love.
  • Love is the defining characteristic of a Christ-follower.
  • Can people see a change in you?

3. Confidence comes when you know you are loved.
One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to Him. John 13:23

  • John calls himself, “the disciple Jesus loved.”
  • Jesus died for you on the cross = substitutionary atonement.
  • Think about the impact on your life of knowing how much God loves you.

4. Be faithful to Jesus all your life.
His master replied, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness.” Matthew 25:21

  • John was faithful to Jesus.
  • Through the good times and the tough times, John was there.
  • God calls you to be faithful.

Communion
Today we will share Communion together. If you are a follower of Jesus, you are invited to His table. In homes throughout our community, we will take the bread (“Christ’s body broken for you”) and the cup (“Christ’s blood poured out for you”) to remember God’s grace and love.
