Masterclass: Romans 9

June 18, 2023

God sent His Son, Jesus, to bring salvation to the world. In the Old Testament, God called out a people for Himself through which He would reveal His character and ultimately send His Son, the Messiah. Salvation is not based on what we do or where we are born. Salvation is found in Jesus alone. Paul always had a heart to share Jesus with others – first for his own people, the Jews, and then for all others, the Gentiles. The call comes to each of us today to accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior and then to share Him with others. May God find us faithful in sharing His heart of salvation with others today.

1. Salvation is through Jesus alone.
Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen. Romans 9:5

  • Paul had a heart for his own people.
  • God has a heart for all people.
    • For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
  • Salvation is not about where you were born, what your family believes, or how good you are. Salvation is through a personal relationship with Jesus alone.
    • For it is by grace you are saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

2. Our God is faithful.
It is not as though God’s Word had failed. For not all who descended from Israel are Israel. Romans 9:6

  • There is no doubt God’s hand has been on the Jewish people.
  • It’s not replacement theology, but Paul’s heart is for the Jews and for all to know Jesus.
    • Jesus said, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10
  • There is a remnant.
  • God will always be faithful to His people.

3. In salvation, we see the intersection of the sovereignty of God and the free will of man.
It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. Romans 9:16

  • Soteriology is the doctrine of salvation.
  • Calvinism vs. Arminianism
  • Our enemy longs to bring division, but we are called to be united in Jesus.
  • Don’t harden your heart to God.

4. As Christ-followers, we are called to share the Good News of Jesus.
As it is written: “See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” Romans 9:33

  • Jesus is the defining moment of history for every person.
  • God involves His children in sharing His message of Good News to the world.
  • Paul stayed passionate about sharing Jesus all his life.
  • God has a mission for your life – to accept Jesus and to share Him with others.
