For the Kids // The Treasure

October 18, 2026

In Matthew 13, Jesus tells 7 parables. In each parable, Jesus is calling us to respond to the Kingdom of Heaven. From sowing seeds of the Gospel to preparing for the final Judgment, Jesus is very clear that we should be investing our lives in the Kingdom of God. First of all, have you made a personal commitment to Jesus? Has there ever been a time you have asked Jesus to forgive your sins and be the Lord and Savior of your life? If not, then how about today? And if so, then are you sowing seeds of the Gospel? Are you investing your life in what really matters? Don’t become so familiar with Jesus that you miss who He is and what He is calling you to do.

1. Recognize the Ultimate Value

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.” Matthew 13:44a

  • The treasure must be found.
  • The treasure demands a decision.
  • The treasure produces joy.

2. Respond to the Kingdom

“Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into a lake and caught all kinds of fish.” Matthew 13:47

  • The net gathers fish of every kind.
  • The final separation is certain.
  • There is an opportunity to respond.

3. Receive Jesus by Faith and not by Familiarity

“And they took offense at Him.” Matthew 13:57a

  • Jesus should change our lives.
  • Familiarity can blind us to God’s work.
  • Unbelief limits what we receive from God.

Another way to understand the treasure parable:

  • Expositional consistency
  • Jesus is the Man in the parable.
  • Therefore, the treasure is you!
