Faith Over Fear // The Cost to Follow

Jesus invites us to follow Him. But following Jesus doesn’t mean life will always be easy. Even as Christians, we go through storms. Some storms are small - a worry, a fear - a passing moment, but other storms are big - relationships, sickness - a longer battle to fight. But we must never forget that Jesus is in the storm with us. Jesus is greater than anything we will ever face, and Jesus is Lord over all. It is in the storms where our faith grows the most. Therefore, will you put your eyes on Jesus and not simply on the storms? Let’s choose faith over fear today.
1. There is a cost to following Jesus.
Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.” Matthew 8:20
- To follow Jesus, you must get out of your comfort zone.
- Following Jesus is where the miracles happen.
- Many want to be a disciple, but they make excuses.
- It is called “faith” for a reason. You don’t have all the answers. You have to trust.
2. Jesus told the disciples to get into the boat.
“When Jesus saw the crowd around Him, He gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.” Matthew 8:18
- The disciples were obeying Jesus when the storm came.
- As Christians, we will go through storms.
- It is in the storms that we learn to trust Jesus.
3. Jesus was asleep in the boat.
“Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.” Matthew 8:24
- Jesus was not stressed at all.
- Don’t forget that Jesus is in your boat.
- Go to Jesus.
- Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
4. Jesus is Sovereign over all.
He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. Matthew 8:26
- Jesus is in control.
- When we are with Jesus, then we don’t have to be afraid.
- They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting the Lord. Psalm 112:7
- Jesus’ past victories give us confidence of His future faithfulness.
